Situated in the heart of the political, cultural and economic capital of China, BNU one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the country, and a world-leading higher education institution renowned for excellence in teacher training and educational science.

The university was founded in 1902 as the Normal College of the Imperial University of Peking, later merging with Peking Women’s Normal University and Fu Jen Catholic University to create the institution as it is today.

BNU works closely with the Confucius Institute at the University of Manchester by arranging secondments for Chinese teaching staff in Manchester, helping build vital business links and sending world teaching experts to deliver teacher training seminars to local educators.

Hanban building

The Office of Chinese Language Council International, known as Hanban, is the founding body for all Confucius Institutes worldwide.

Hanban supports each Institute in delivery of its objectives through the provision of both financial and physical resources such as library materials and language learning resources.

Hanban also arranges secondments for Chinese language teachers, administrative staff and directors to Confucius Institutes around the world.

All teaching staff are carefully selected and each is a qualified teacher of Chinese as a foreign language with at least five years of experience of teaching foreigners.

Hanban’s headquarters in Beijing supports the work of almost 500 institutes around the world.
