We are celebrating our 20th anniversary in 2026. Visit our events page to find out how you can join the celebrations throughout the year.
After receiving approval in July 2005, The Confucius Institute was formally launched in October 2006. A partnership between The University of Manchester and Beijing Normal University, Manchester is the proud home to the second Confucius Institute to be established in the UK.
Each Confucius Institute serves its community in a different way. Here in Manchester our focus is on the following four key areas:
- Chinese learning, teaching and testing;
- Promotion of contemporary China;
- Education exchange;
- Engagement with China.
Our main purpose is the teaching of Chinese language through our evening classes, school partnerships and teacher training programmes. Secondly, we aim to encourage a broader and deeper understanding of Chinese culture and contemporary China through our vibrant public events programme.
Over the last two decades we have taught thousands of students, built links with over dozens of schools in the region and worked with major cultural organisations all over the city, establishing ourselves as a centre for Chinese language learning and a hub for Chinese culture in the North West.
