Conversational Mandarin

This series is designed for those who wish to develop their speaking and listening skills in a limited time.

The series is divided into ten levels to cater for a range of different abilities.

Please read the prerequisites and course descriptions carefully to identify the right level for you before heading to our enrolment section. We recommend that for each level, students undertake 3 hours of independent study per week to ensure they can keep up with the pace of the course. 

Each course lasts for ten weeks with classes running once a week on either a Wednesday evening or Saturday morning (online and in-person options available). 

Beginner Conversational Mandarin 1

Course description: A beginners' course which focuses on developing the skills of listening and speaking in Mandarin Chinese. The course aims to equip the students with useful words and phrases for practical use, and covers greetings, making an acquaintance, making an enquiry (time/ directions/ reservations), and fulfilling daily needs (purchasing items/catching buses/ordering food, etc.)

Learning outcomes:

  • Acquire the confidence and ability to have basic exchanges with native speakers to facilitate travel in China
  • Establish a core vocabulary of 150 Chinese words used in everyday contexts.

Learning materials: All teaching materials have been specifically developed by our teachers using a variety of sources and so all learning materials will be provided throughout the course.

Beginner Conversational Mandarin 2

Course description: A beginners' course which focuses on developing the skills of listening and speaking in Mandarin Chinese. The student will also learn to recognise some basic characters. The course aims to equip students with useful words and phrases for practical use, and covers making requests in a cafe, enquiring about someone's nationality, making a request for help, asking for directions and places, discussing the menu and ordering dishes in a restaurant, making an appointment, asking for help in a shop, proposing a toast and giving a compliment.

Learning outcomes:

  • Acquire the confidence and ability to have simple conversations with native speakers to facilitate travel and study in China
  • Have established a core vocabulary of 300 Chinese words used in everyday contexts.

Post-Beginner Conversational Mandarin 3

Course description: A beginners' course which focuses on developing the skills of listening and speaking in Mandarin Chinese. The student will also learn to recognise some basic characters. This course aims to equip students with useful words and phrases for practical use. It will cover the following; making enquiries about someone's impression of a city, describing the weather, inquiring about someone's weekend plans, inquiring about someone's travel experience, asking for directions, exchanging money, checking out of a hotel, discussing taking a flight, talking about Chinese food and bargaining with merchants when shopping.

Learning outcomes:

  • Learn to speak with a degree of fluency
  • Acquire the confidence and ability to have simple conversations with native speakers to facilitate travel and living in China.
  • Establish a core vocabulary of 600 Chinese words used in everyday contexts and basic grammatical structures covered in the HSK 3 syllabus
  • However, Conversational Mandarin 3.1 mainly focuses on the skills of listening and speaking in Mandarin Chinese, thus further study on Chinese Characters would be recommended for any student wishing to take their Chinese study further or pursue the HSK 3 exam.

Intermediate Conversational Mandarin 4

Pre-requisite: Completion of Conversational Mandarin 3 or 60 hours' intensive Mandarin

Fee: £160 full price

Course description: A post-beginners' course which focuses on developing the skills of listening and speaking in Mandarin Chinese. Students will learn how to recognise and write some common Chinese characters. Students will also be taught how to learn Chinese characters using radicals. The course aims to equip students with 100 characters and 200 words for practical use. It will cover:

  • greetings and making an appointment with an old friend
  • commenting on the weather
  • asking for directions
  • making enquiries about locations
  • booking a hotel
  • buying tickets
  • buying electronics
  • planning a dinner

Learning outcomes:

  • Learn how to speak with a degree of fluency and acquire the confidence and ability to have a conversation with Chinese people. 
  • Learn to recognise commonly used Chinese characters and be able to write some basic ones.

Beginners Conversational Mandarin 4 refers to some basic and commonly used Chinese characters. However, for any student who wishes to take their Chinese study further or pursue the HSK 3/4 exams, they should pursue further study of Chinese characters.

Intermediate Conversational Mandarin 5

Course description: A pre-intermediate course which focuses on developing the skills of listening and speaking in Mandarin Chinese. The student will also learn to recognise some basic characters. The course aims to equip students with useful words and phrases for practical use.

  • Speak with a degree of fluency and acquire the confidence and ability to have simple conversations with native speakers, to facilitate study and travel in China.
  • Have mastered a core vocabulary of 150 Chinese words used in everyday contexts and 20-30 language structures used in everyday contexts.

Intermediate Conversational Mandarin 6

Course description: A pre-intermediate course which focuses on developing the skills of listening and speaking in Mandarin Chinese. The student will also learn to recognise some basic characters. The course aims to equip students with useful words and phrases for practical use.

Learning outcomes:

  • Speak with a degree of fluency and acquire the confidence and ability to have simple conversations with native speakers, which will satisfy one's requirement in studying and travelling to China.
  • Have mastered a core vocabulary of 150 Chinese words and 20-30 language structures used in everyday contexts.

Course description: A post-intermediate course which focuses on developing the skills of listening, speaking and reading in Mandarin Chinese.  The course aims to equip students with useful words and grammars for practical use.

Learning outcomes:  

• Speak with a degree of fluency and acquire the confidence and ability to have complex conversations with native speakers, to facilitate study and travel in China.  

• Have mastered a core vocabulary of 150 Chinese words and 20-30 language structures used in everyday contexts.
