Welcome to our new Senior Language Tutor – Ms Lucy Yang

The Confucius Institute would like to introduce Ms Lucy Yang as their newly appointed Senior Language Tutor.

Lucy started her new role back in July, after completing her PGCE (Mandarin with Spanish) at Edge Hill University with two outstanding placement evaluations.

Lucy has been teaching Mandarin in China and the UK for over ten years so far. Prior to this job, she worked as a Mandarin teacher from Yr 7 to sixth form in several secondary schools in England. In China she received her Bachelor degree in Teaching Chinese as a Second language at Southwest University and then her Master degree in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at Beijing Normal University. She has taught Mandarin to foreign students at Beijing Normal University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Southwest University, 'Princeton in Beijing' Mandarin Programme and Chongwon High School in South Korea. In 2011, she won the Second Prize in the National Business Chinese Teaching Competition in the UK held by the LSE Confucius Institute for Business London. Her research focuses on Mandarin teaching pedagogy in the UK, the cross-cultural adaptation of English speaking students in China and Chinese Neijiang dialect.

Lucy’s main role is to provide academic leadership in the Chinese language teaching and delivery. She is responsible for supervision, co-ordination and management of the teaching team consisting of both local and seconded staff in conjunction with the Chinese director. She is part of the Confucius Institute’s management team. Other duties include teacher training, curriculum development and any administrative duties associated with teaching. She teaches Advanced Chinese, Business Chinese and one to one lessons this term. She participates in teaching evaluation and assists with the implementation of other Quality Assurance procedures.
