Teacher Training Programme for Chinese Language and Culture (Primary School)
Begins 22 September 2011 (10 Weeks), The University of Manchester, Oxford Road
The Confucius Institute has developed a teacher training programme for non-native primary school teachers in Manchester to help them to incorporate Chinese language teaching in their daily teaching. Our programme is suitable for Primary School teachers, Head teachers, Language co-ordinators or anyone who is interested in learning and teaching Chinese.
The programme is designed to prepare non-native speaker teachers to deliver Chinese language taster sessions with the aid of tailor-made courseware and multimedia tools; to enable teachers to introduce Chinese arts & crafts, songs & games as well as sports activities with step-by-step instructions and templates; to help schools to promote Chinese language and culture to wider communities.
Manchester City Council runs one of the British Council’s Area Link projects, establishing partnership among 30 local schools with those in Beijing and developing joint curriculum projects between partner schools. Our training programme is designed to sustain the good work carried out among these participating schools, particularly after the end of the funding period. We aim to eliminate antipathy towards Chinese language and culture and to inspire teachers’interest and enthusiasm.
The training programme is made up of two parts: language teaching & learning, and cultural practice to suit different interests and abilities. In this way, teachers are immersed in Chinese culture opening up opportunities for schools to include Chinese language in their curriculum, through a teaching model of combining local teachers with native language teachers.
The first programme was run in September 2010 over 8 weeks with 1.5 hours per week. A total of 18 language teachers and head teachers from 8 schools participated the training programme and showed immense interest and positive attitudes.
Feedback from programme participants
'I have been very impressed with the delivery and content of the course. The teaching activities we have been taught are easily adaptableto children at various ages and stages of developmentand cover relevant material for learning Mandarin at an early stage. I think including both language and culture has allowed a broader insight and understandinginto some areas of Chinese culture, which can be linked to or compared to the lives and cultures of the children we teach in England.' - KS2 Primary school teacher from Manchester.
'I like the way we do an hour of language andthen an hour of cultural studies...I have kept this format with my class and it keeps them fully engaged' - Charles, Primary school head teacher.
I've enjoyed learning Chinese in a way that gives me a variety of techniques and vocabulary I can use to teach it to children myself. I like how the course has been tailored to what we've asked for and the way that lessons build upon each other - Kataya, Primary school teacher.
Our 'Chinese Club' have prospered and thank you again for helping Rachel and myself in helping the children to learn. The involvement of the Confucius Institute was an important factor in the development of the Language and Culture provision within the School. - Peter, Primary school teacher.
