Outreach
We welcome the opportunities to work with schools, businesses, government organisations and local communities in developing better understanding of Chinese language and cultures.
We work closely with the University Widening Participation team to bring Chinese language and culture to children of all social background and abilities. We actively promote language learning in conjunction with the School's external relations by offering free language tasters and organising cultural workshops.
For the past two years, we have established contacts with over 30 schools in the North West. We were invited to run language taster sessions and cultural workshops to the schools. For example, Wilmslow High, Urmston Grammar School, Marple Hall, Hope Valley. We participated regional events such as Primary Language Conference by Manchester City Council, National Primary Languages by CilT, COLT project (Community and less taught languages).
We work with local education authorities to enable the introduction of Chinese into school curriculum and sustain the teaching by providing support and resources. We have worked with the Manchester City Council, Bolton LEA, Bury LEA. At national level, we collaborate with British Council, SSAT (Specialist Schools and Academies Trust), other Confucius Institutes in the UK.
We are currently managing a national project on behalf of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS), the Scottish Government and the Department for Learning and Employment in Northern Ireland to select 450 undergraduates onto a 3-week Study China Programme.
