The Confucius Institute Spring Festival Gala 2012 with a performance from the Performing Arts Troupe of Beijing Normal UniversityOn Monday, 30 January 2012 we were very lucky enough to celebrate this year's Chinese New Year Spring Festival with a spectacular show from the renowned performing arts troupe of Beijing Normal University at Academy 2 in Manchester University's Student Union. The show featured traditional Chinese dance, a Shaolin King Fu demonstration, Chinese neo-folk music played on traditional instruments like the erhu and dizi as well as poetry, calligraphy and choral song. A special performance from the Orchestra of Beijing Normal University Primary SchoolOn Sunday 5th and Monday 6th November 2011 we were thrilled to host two special performances of the Orchestra of Beijing Normal University Experimental Primary School. The 25-strong brass, woodwind and percussion orchestra, all aged between 8 and 11 years old, arrived from Beijing on Sunday 4th November for their very first trip to the UK. Read more... |

Zhu Wen in conversation with Julia Lovell Sunday 23 October 2011, 4.30pm, The International Anthony Burgess Foundation Continuing our partnership with the Manchester Literature Festival, we were delighted to welcome acclaimed Chinese author and director Zhu Wen to Manchester. His work has been published in China’s most prestigious literary magazines, and he has produced several books of poetry and fiction including I Love Dollars and Other Stories of China, depicting the violence, chaos and dark comedy of the post-Mao era. Staff Training with Selfridges Exchange Square Wednesday 7 September 2011, Selfridges & Co, Exchange Square, Manchester In the first local initiative of its kind, we designed and delivered a bespoke training package to floor staff at Manchester's most popular high end department store, Selfridges. Training introduced staff to some of the more general shopping habits and customs of Chinese consumers as well as some basic language skills. Read more...

Teacher Training Activities We developed a teacher training programme for primary school teachers in Manchester with the objective of facilitating teachers to incorporate Chinese language teaching into their daily lessons. Participating primary schools in Greater Manchester were linked up with schools in Beijing and visits were arranged under the British Council Area Link project.... Read More |

Lang Lang at the Bridgwater Hall The Confucius Instutute ran a competition for all staff and students of Chinese at the University of Manchester to win two pairs of tickets to see world-renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang perform at the Bridgewater Hall on Friday 27 May 2011. A musical icon in his homeland, the 26-year-old pianist is famous the world over for his dazzling technique and captivating performances. The winners were Jessica Zhang and Susannah Jones. |

Re-Thinking the Image of China in Global History On Wednesday 18th May 2011 The Confucius Institute and the Centre for Chinese Studies welcomed over 110 audience members to the historic John Rylands Library for a keynote address by Professor Benjamin Elman, Head of East Asian Studies at Princeton University, USA. The event followed on the heels of the recent discovery of an album of rare 18th Century Chinese prints in the John Rylands Library. Confucius Institute Scholarships Announced In May 2011 The Confucius Institute began accepting applications for the 2011 scholarship programme for outstanding students of Chinese. This is an incredible opportunity to spend time studying at a Chinese University and there are a limited number of scholarships available. The Confucius Institute scholarship selection panel will review all applications announce the successful applicants before the end of the term. |
