Manchester Confucius Institute has now got its own Weibo page! Sina Weibo, currently the largest Chinese social network, is actually a microblogging platform commonly compared to Twitter. Like other microblogging sites, it is a place for people to share their news and post pictures, videos, music, or other links. It can also be a great tool for Chinese language learning and to find out more about the culture.

Weibo is more than just a Twitter copy with a Chinese interface — in fact, Weibo has more accounts and active users than Twitter does. An increasing number of foreigners or foreign agencies that want to draw the attention of or tap into the Chinese market have been opening accounts on Weibo. Weibo also attracts non-Chinese users who want to know more about Chinese culture. By following celebrities, influencers, and like-minded individuals, they see the service as a must for foreigners really wanting to get to grips with China.

With the most current Chinese hot topics and phrases, Weibo also serves as a good way to learn Chinese. You'll get exposure to new vocabularies, sentences and grammar and you will encounter them quite often, which helps with memorising the words and their meanings and uses. It might be a little overwhelming at first, but once you find your way around the site it is fun to see how much you can understand and learn.
If you are looking to start, follow the instructions to open a Sina Weibo account. You can change the interface language to English on the very first page, the Sign Up panel. To sign up all you will need is an email address. You will be asked to create a username/nickname and share some personal information such as gender, date of birth, and country. Weibo will then ask you to select one to five topics you are interested in. Once you have chosen some interests, you will be welcomed to the Weibo community. The only thing left to do is to confirm your email address through an activation email.
