Looking China Youth Film Project

The Confucius Institute will give two students the opportunity to join the Looking China (www.lookingchina.cn) project, during which they will spend two weeks creating short documentary films about life in China. They will be part of 100 international students telling their individual stories of China and Chinese culture from a bowl of noodles to life in a small mountainous village. Watch some inspiring films on the Looking China website.

Summer programmes

The Confucius Institute is offering a variety of short study programmes in the summer ranging from intensive language study in Manchester to two/three weeks of study in China such as Study China Programme (www.studychina.org.uk), Philosophy Summer School and Summer Intensive Language School at Beijing Normal University (weblink).  We offer scholarships for most of the programmes in China.

Bi-lingual play: From Shore to Shore

The Confucius Institute is sponsoring an exclusive performance of From Shore to Shore at Yang Sing Restaurant on Friday 19 May, which tells the story of three Chinese immigrants on their journey to find a place to call home. Chinese students will be invited to a bilingual creative writing workshop, where they will handle the artefacts from the Manchester Museum Chinese collection and write their own stories.

Public talk

The Confucius Institute is working in partnership with the Lake District Visitor China Forum to promote the tourism of the Lake District. A talk on the Lake poets like William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and other literary figures who have lived and worked in the area is scheduled in May and will give the cultural background to Chinese students who are visiting the Lakes.

Other cultural events

Other activities in the next few months include our Dragon Boat race at Salford Quays in June, an exhibition of Chinese calligraphy and painting at Whitworth Art Gallery in July and a new Chinese play about student’s life later in the year.
