Over the past ten years the Confucius Institute has formed partnerships with a number of cultural organisations across the city, which is often based on expert advice on Chinese language or culture.

This year, The National Ballet of China will be visiting The Lowry and we were able to connect them with an academic expert for a pre-show talk on Thursday, 24 November 2016.

Q&A with Steve Cowton, Head of Theatres at The Lowry Centre Limited

What brings the National Ballet of China and this performance to the Lowry, who initiated this?

We were approached by the Company who wanted to perform in the UK again after a long break – we managed to persuade Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London to join us so that the company had two weeks of dates. This makes it worth their while travelling such a long way – the flight costs are very expensive when you bringing over 90 people on tour! It is also supported by The Movement – an initiative between The Lowry, Sadler’s Wells and Birmingham Hippodrome, funded by Arts Council England, to broaden public experience of dance.

Has the Lowry worked with them before and hosted any other Chinese performing groups? If so, what does the Lowry hope to bring to the audience?

The Company have never performed at the Lowry before – or indeed at any UK venues outside of London and Edinburgh. We want to give our audiences a genuine flavour of authentic Chinese ballet from one of the World’s great companies.

Do you have future plan to bring more Chinese performances to the Lowry? If so, who are on your wishing list?

We hope this performance goes well and local audiences enjoy what they see! Several years ago we presented The Guangdong Acrobatic Troupe with their production of Swan Lake which was quite incredible – and we’d love to have them back again one day! We’re always open to approaches from other productions and companies.
