Miss Xuan Cao - My Journey

29 March 2016

'Time flies when you are having fun' – a phrase I heard and certainly learned to understand during my stay in the UK.

More than two years have now passed since I arrived in Manchester, this lovely and vast city. I still remember the feeling of coming to a totally unfamiliar place; a mixture of excitement, uncertainty and a little fear. I was sent to teach Chinese at a local High School shortly after my arrival, not having much time to adapt to say the least. The school prides itself in supplying high quality education for all students from varying backgrounds. By that time, Chinese has been embedded in the curriculum for 5 years. I have to say that, despite all the support from the school and the institute, I was too inexperienced to deal with the strong, tall students and achieve a great learning outcome at the same time. I had to learn that British students learn in different ways, being more active and challenging in class, which is different to the environment I was used to. However, about 6 months later, I finally understood the difference between teaching here and in China, and became more confident when standing in front of the class.

I spent the second year of my internship in a local primary school. I must say that this particular year teaching really is an unforgettable memory. I felt instantly accepted in the classroom and the trust and affection that I received from the children every day, have made my job so much more meaningful. Their laughter and love inspired me to become a better teacher.

I am so grateful for everything that I was able to experience and it will be hard to say good bye. I will never forget this city and my time here.
