Arts lead the way in the city

A flurry of Chinese art events in the city are filling this year's calendar, starting with the impressive exhibition of Unmanned Nature gun powder drawing and installation by Cai Guo-qiang.

A flurry of Chinese art events in the city are filling this year's calendar, starting with the impressive exhibition of Unmanned Nature gun powder drawing and installation by Cai Guo-qiang at the re-opening of the Whitworth, followed by the Eastern Exchanges: East Asian Art and Design exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery, to the first UK premier of M+ - Chinese Art from the 1970s to now collected by the Swiss collector Uli Sigg in July.

Here are some names to look out for:

  • Ai Weiwei
  • Yang Fudong
  • Zhang Xiaogang

Furthermore, Chinese writers and their works are getting exposure through films and translations.

The screening of Golden Era at the Cornerhouse in February portrays one of the most prominent women writers in the Republic Era Xiao Hong. And contemporary writer Diao Dou will make his appearance at the October's Manchester Literature Festival. His surrealist short stories are being translated into English and will be published by Comma Press in time for the festival event.
